…and that is the extent of my Japanese so far.
My name is Emily. エミリ, I suppose. The journey to my admitted infatuation with everything Japanese began two years ago when a friend invited me to watch anime with him. Sad to say, I knew nothing about anime – oh, those dreary, colorless days of ignorance. He started me on "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu", which I have to say is the funniest filler season ever. Since then I have been a dedicated anime watcher, and if you want my opinion on subs versus dubs, definitely subs. I mean, come on. Anime is from Japan, so you should at least hear it in its original language, as it was meant to be. Not to say that there aren't good dubs, but nothing captures the spirit of anime like the Japanese language.
My mom and I went on a trip to Tokyo and Kyoto last spring. It was the most amazing trip ever. I bought a ton of CDs at Tower Records in Shibuya. I downed many half-liters of Kirin milk tea. Again, most amazing trip ever. I can't wait to go back, and hopefully when I return, I will actually be able to read the menus and not end up with a cheese pizza instead of an omelette! (Hey, the little pictures in the menu were almost identical.)
To close, here is a YouTube video of one of my favorite J-pop artists, angela. The anime isn't too bad, either, but typical to form, I didn't like the protagonist as much as an *ahem* certain secondary character.
We'll leave it at that – and just so you know, it's not who you think it is. But perhaps, through little hints, one day you may learn the secret.
Yay another anime fan! SUBS ALL THE WAY!! It's incredible that you've been to Japan! I went only once as a small child and don't remember anything at all sadly. I'm excited to go abroad and study in Japan. I'm guessing the anime is "K"? I haven't seen it yet, but perhaps I will in the near future--then I will figure out your secret!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to a great year with you!
Yes, the anime is "K"! At first I thought it was really strange, but it grows on you. Plus, the art style is just awesome. You can watch it here: http://www.animeultima.tv/watch/k-english-subbed-dubbed-online/
DeleteWHAT?! YOU'VE BEEN TO JAPAN!? I'm terminally jealous...
ReplyDeleteAnime club unite! I think subs are the better option of the two most of the time, but there have been a few really good dubs too! I think Black Lagoon was superbly translated, as well as the Neon Genesis Evangelion series and movies, Mamoru Hosoda films, studio ghibli's films, and both versions of Full Metal Alchemist- not to mention the very popular, yet controversial, P&SWG.
Angela is very famous and talented! I have always been an Utada Hikaru and Yuri fan though...
Anyway, I think this year is gonna be great! Can't wait to see you in class!
Funny you should mention FMP, I'm actually watching that right now. I also enjoyed watching K, it was beautifully animated. I'm sure you'll be happy to hear that there's a sequel coming out soon in 2014. Maybe you'll be good enough to understand it in Japanese by the time it comes out ^^.
ReplyDeleteYes!!! Sequel! They have also been releasing light novels for the series, too. Better study that kanji. :)
DeleteI'm betting your favorite character is the white haired kid lying down with the cat on his chest.
ReplyDeleteHi (Other) Emily,
ReplyDeleteはじめまして!
I'm a Columbia University First Year japanese student. I was actually drawn to your blog (among the random list) because of the title. I was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana! I used to watch a ton on anime too and I would ALWAYS cringe at dubs. I really haven't watched anything for years though, any recommendations?
どうぞよろしくおねがいします!
Another Emily
はじめまして!
DeleteIt's great meeting another Emily and fellow にほんごのがくせい。To be honest, I haven't watched much anime recently either, but I always enjoyed "Full Metal Panic!", "Code Geass", and "Kaze no Stigma" if you haven't seen any of those. The dub for "Kaze no Stigma" is actually good, believe it or not. What sort of anime did you like to watch?
どうぞよろしくおねがいします。
エミリさんはどこのがくせいですか?わたしはコロンビアだいがくのいちねんせいです。
DeleteOmg, Code Geass is one of my favorite shows ever and Full Metal Panic was one of the first animes I ever watched. I haven't seen Kaze no Stigma though. I kinda want to start watching anime again just to practice listening. What is it about? (これはどんなアニメですか?)
